Developing the EBC Apollo Big Brake Kit for the Mini Cooper F66 JCW

When the new Mini Cooper F66 JCW launched, it immediately sparked conversation within the MINI community.
While the latest generation platform brought major improvements in refinement, technology, and overall road presence, one of the biggest criticism points from enthusiasts was the factory braking setup — particularly the move to a relatively small single-piston front caliper arrangement.
For a car carrying the JCW badge, many owners expected something more substantial.
And honestly? We agreed.
So rather than waiting around for the aftermarket to catch up, we decided to help make it happen ourselves.

Working Directly With EBC Brakes
is the ability to work directly with manufacturers on real-world product development.
That’s exactly what happened with the F66 JCW.
We reached out directly to Stefan Goddard at EBC Brakes to discuss the potential of developing a proper high-performance braking solution for the platform.
For those unfamiliar with EBC, they are one of the largest performance brake manufacturers in the world, designing and producing braking components in the UK with decades of motorsport and fast-road experience behind them. From trackday cars and drift cars through to OEM replacement upgrades and full motorsport applications, EBC has become one of the most recognised names in braking performance globally.
Once conversations began, things moved quickly.
We supplied our own F66 JCW development car directly to EBC so their engineering team could begin work on a completely new braking package for the platform.
A huge part of the project was also handled by EBC technician and motorsport enthusiast Owen Fox — known online by many for his drift car build and motorsport background. Having genuine enthusiasts involved in development always makes a difference, because the focus becomes about real-world driving feel rather than simply creating something that “fits”.
Solving One of the F66’s Biggest Weaknesses
One of the most talked-about issues surrounding the F66 JCW was the downgrade to the factory front braking hardware.
Compared to previous JCW generations — and especially considering the performance and weight of the new platform — the standard single-piston front caliper setup became a major discussion point among enthusiasts almost immediately.
The Apollo kit completely transforms this.
The factory single-piston setup is replaced with EBC’s substantial 6-piston Apollo calipers paired to large 335mm fully floating 2-piece discs, creating a braking system that finally feels worthy of the JCW badge.
And the difference on the road is enormous.
Initial bite is significantly stronger, pedal feel becomes sharper and more confidence inspiring, and repeated heavy braking no longer overwhelms the system in the way the OEM setup can under aggressive use.
More importantly, the car finally gains the kind of braking consistency you’d expect from a serious modern hot hatch.


Developing a Rear Disc Specifically for the F66 JCW
One of the most interesting parts of the development process involved the rear braking setup.
Rather than simply focusing on the front axle, EBC wanted to ensure the entire braking package felt balanced and visually cohesive.
To achieve this, EBC actually developed a completely new rear grooved brake disc specifically for the F66 JCW application.
Prior to our development visit, this matching rear disc configuration simply didn’t exist.
The newly developed rear disc was designed to complement the appearance and performance characteristics of the front floating setup, helping maintain brake balance while also giving the car a much more complete and premium overall braking package.
It’s details like this that separate a properly developed platform solution from a generic catalogue parts approach.

Engineering Challenges & Wheel Clearance
As with most serious big brake kits, wheel clearance quickly became one of the biggest challenges.
Large multi-piston calipers require substantial spoke clearance, and the new F66 platform is particularly sensitive due to wheel design and offset limitations.
During testing on our own car, we found that the factory wheels would not properly clear the Apollo calipers without large spacers — something we generally try to avoid wherever possible.
Our development setup ultimately ran 19” wheels with 13mm front spacers to achieve correct clearance with our AC Schnitzer wheel setup, although wheel spoke design plays a huge role in final compatibility.
To make the process easier for customers, EBC also provides printable wheel clearance templates that allow owners to check fitment against their specific wheel setup before installation.
We are also continuing discussions regarding potential wheel solutions specifically tailored around the Apollo setup for the F66 platform.

Road & Track Performance
One of the biggest priorities during development was ensuring the kit remained genuinely usable on the road while still offering substantial performance gains during aggressive driving and track use.
Many large brake kits sacrifice drivability:
- Poor cold bite
- Excessive noise
- Overly aggressive pedal characteristics
- Difficult modulation in traffic
That wasn’t the goal here.
The final Apollo package delivers a huge increase in outright stopping power while still retaining excellent road manners and pedal modulation for everyday driving.
But once pushed harder, the system really begins to show its strengths.
Repeated heavy braking that would normally begin to stress the OEM setup becomes dramatically more manageable, with far greater thermal stability and resistance to fade.
The result is a car that feels substantially more confidence inspiring when driven properly.
More Than Just a Brake Upgrade
For us, this project represented something bigger than simply fitting larger brakes to a new MINI.
The F66 platform is still extremely new, and a huge part of our goal with the car has been helping accelerate genuine aftermarket development for enthusiasts who want more from the platform.
Working directly alongside companies like EBC allows products to be developed around real-world enthusiast use rather than generic assumptions.
And honestly, after driving the finished setup ourselves, it completely changes the character of the car.
The braking performance now finally feels aligned with the capability of the chassis.
